What bands should you see in Eurosonic? Which ones are going to be big? These ones, of course.

ADNA
Based in
Germany, Berlin
Style

Adna Kadic’s music feels as cold as the Baltic at night, painted against a sombre landscape with stirring, heartfelt lyrics. The young Swedish singer’s emotionally-tinged songs bring the softly-voiced star to larger-than-life proportions through hallowed and crushing soliloquies to the night.

Performed on the piano and guitar, Adna’s songs lead with the heart and are poignant and intensely moving. Originally from Gothenburg and now residing in Berlin, the Swedish singer racked up 20 million Spotify plays by the age of 21, with two full-length albums ...

Albin Lee Meldau
Based in
Sweden, Gothenburg
Style

All of a sudden it was simply there, the deep, bluesy voice. The sort of voice that cuts through noise and demands you listen. But of course, a voice like that can’t just come straight out of nowhere. As a son of an eminent Swedish jazz singer, Albin Lee Meldau has been singing retro pop classics at weddings, bars and on the streets of his hometown for the better part of his 27 years. He was also one of the two vocalists in Swedish soul band The Magnolia for many years.

With his first attempts at a solo career, Albin Lee Meldau was right on target: the ...

Barbagallo
Based in
France, Toulouse, Perth
Style
Pop
Science is unequivocal: without an event of cataclysmic proportions or the intervention of a god of some kind, turning the world upside down is an impossible task. You want summer in December? There seems to be only one solution: cross the Equator, head south and you’ll find warm temperatures and hot sand, luxuriant forests and scorching sunshine. Unless someone proves science wrong. This someone might be Julien Barbagallo. Don’t move, not even a toe – listen to this man’s second album under his own name, Grand chien, and you’ll immediately forget about the cold and the grim, the fallen leaves, the naked trees, the flu and ...
Beissoul & Einius
Based in
Lithuania, Vilnius
Style
Singer Beissoul (that's how Lithuanians pronounce "bass soul", real name – Artūras Žabas) and producer Einius Jarutis came a long way since they emerged on Lithuanian pop scene in 2012. Gigs in Berlin, London and Kiev, energetic festival performances wildly weird videos, a Best Electronic Act win at Lithuanian music awards M.A.M.A. in 2016 – in their home country, this duo are already bona fide pop stars, and it wouldn't be wise to bet against them making a significant international brekthrough during the next couple of years. It all started when Beissoul appeared on a national TV show, becoming an overnight sensation – people were ...
Birthh
Based in
Italy, Florence
Style

It’s not easy giving an honest review when you’re a band’s groupie. OK, I’m just joking – I’m not Birthh’s groupie, but do think that had I had a band as a teenager, I would’ve definitely wanted to sound like her. Her voice hits you like something that you jealously keep to yourself, like the first time I heard Cat Power acoustic or The xx. And Alice Bisi, her real name, made it all at just 19 years of age. She seems so lost in the dark and tortured, but her voice guides us over fields we wouldn’t otherwise dare cross. Her first record Born in the Woods echoes some really big artists and ...

Black Oak
Based in
Netherlands, Utrecht / Friesland
Style
We could tour together as a supergroup called Black Oak,” they once joked. OK, so supergroup might be a too grand a term for these two respected Dutch singer-songwriters. We are talking about Geert van der Velde of The Black Atlantic and Thijs Kuijken of I Am Oak – each in his own way a master of melancholy, dreamy folk pop. In 2014 they joined forces to make a split EP and two years later they finally blended their talents to produce their debut album, Equinox. ...
Chui
Based in
Croatia, Zagreb
Style
"Chui" was just a Swahili word for "leopard" when keyboard maestro Toni Starešinić, also known as the creative force behind Zagreb's neo soul combo Mangroove, decided to start another band and play some prog jazz with a modern approach. After a few years of serious live jamming and studio sessions, the instrumental jazz trio Chui was established with a renowned member of the Croational national broadcaster HRT's Big Band, saxophonist Vojkan Jocić, and quite simply the best Croatian drummer, Janko Novoselić. Their most eclectic release, Third Sun from the Stone (Dancing Bear, 2015) included complex self-penned prog jazz tunes, ...
Flavien Berger
Based in
France, Paris
Style
Don't trust the Internet. Never. Look at this article you're reading right now, for instance. It states that Flavien Berger is French, that he's from Paris. The photo shows a creature seemingly complying with all the criteria usually associated with human beings. Dates are mentioned – 2014, 2015, the 21st century. But listen to Berger’s first two EPs, Glitter Glaze and Mars Balnéaire, or to his long-format odysseys Léviathan and Contrebande 01. Le Disque de Noël, all released on the cutting-edge Pan European label, also home to Pony Hoax, Nicolas Ker, Koudlam and Judah Warsky. Or go to one ...
Giungla
Based in
Italy, Ravenna
Style
Emanuela Drei aka Giungla comes from the same little town as the queen of Italian pop Laura Pausini, but the only other thing they have in common is their charisma when they start to sing and perform. Not too pop, not too punk, Giungla is one of the girls that could really start a revolution in European music next year. She is simply herself, a wonderful Italian woman, nothing fake about her, but when she straps on her guitar, it's easy to understand why she chose a name that means "jungle" in English....
Jacques
Based in
France, Strasbourg, Paris
Style
Tout est magnifique ("Everything is wonderful"), boldly states Strasbourg-born and Paris-based producer Jacques's first EP, released on his up-and-coming label Pain Surprise. His claim is to be taken very literally; for the young, bizarre, hilarious yet profound man, who hides deep thoughts and serious mysticism beneath his freakishly tonsured scalp, each and every one of the soulless things that surround you is full of wonders. Those pans you cook your steak in, the old cheese grater sleeping in the dust of a forgotten cupboard? Full of secrets, mysteries and sounds. The screwdriver you cursed at heavily while painfully assembling ...
Kid Flicks
Based in
Greece, Athens
Style
Nickos Dervisis, aka Kid Flicks, is a musical chameleon – a restless producer and songwriter who goes from sunshine pop to world music, from heavy samples to ethereal harmonies. He changes location almost as often as he changes styles, splitting his time between Athens and London, but that’s OK because the information-hungry, eerily-voiced sound collagist can produce his work on a laptop. His debut album, Hearts of Gold, was released in 2011 through Inner Ear Records, a record which he crafted single-handedly: music, ...
Kiol
Based in
Italy, Torino
Style
He's not even 20 years old, but his talent is a rare gem in the Italian music scene. Perhaps in part also due to moving abroad to Ireland. If nothing else, that's where he got his nickname from – ceol, pronounced "kiol", which means "music" in Gaelic....
Me + Marie
Based in
Switzerland, Scuol
Style
There’s a place in the Swiss Alps where people speak a strange language called Romansh, which is spoken by only 60,000 people. Among these mysterious specimens is Roland Scandella, singer-guitarist of Me and Marie. Nowadays he mainly sings in English but the music he writes with his partner, singer-drummer Maria del Val, still bears a similarity to his birthplace in that it’s as rough and pure as a snowy mountain.  ...
Marta Ren & The Groovelvets
Based in
Portugal, Porto
Style

Stop. Look. Listen. That’s the motto of Marta Ren’s debut album. And you really should. Marta is not a newcomer. Marta is an old soul, trapped inside a young body, full of energy, raw power and plenty of XX chromosomes. She often says that she would love to have lived in the 60s and 70s. But we can listen to old stories with her DNA.

Stop. Marta has been around for quite some years now. She started as a teenager in a band called Sloppy Joe, and never stopped since. She grew up watching her father playing guitar in a rock ‘n’ roll cover band. It all made sense when she met New Max, a young Portuguese producer, ...

Noiserv
Based in
Portugal, Lisbon
Style
Pop
Created around 2005, Noiserv is the perfect example of how minimalist sound can make your mind travel the furthest. Melody, space and diversity seem to be the engineer’s main ingredients for creating a project with a unique and very evocative sound. Highly acclaimed by critics, the project's author has been called the "Orchestra-man" due to the enormous amount of instruments he puts into use in his tracks. Noiserv was created a decade ago by David Santos, an engineer who was raised in a family of music aficionados. Although his father taught him the first guitar chords, he took it upon himself to learn every other instrument he could get ...
Témé Tan
Based in
Belgium, Brussels
Style
Over a few years and through various fragmented projects, Tanguy Haesevoets aka Teme Tan became a master in mixing sounds and his influences. In 2011, he touched base in Kinshasa, where he had been born and spent his early years, and auto-produced the album Matiti, with the title track displaying the quality and easy-going high pitch of his voice. Then a journey to Brasil ended with the release of a colourful EP of cover songs, further widening the field of sonic possibilities....
Trupa Trupa
Based in
Poland, Gdansk
Style
Pop

Trupa Trupa combines dirty guitar sounds with the psychedelic twists of the 60s and 70s. They sound as if they were the product of a meeting between Sonic Youth and the Beatles, as their stifling, grinding style doesn’t interfere with catchy melodies. They’ve proven that their unusual, somewhat difficult sound could attract and be appreciated by a broad audience. The quartet, formed in Gdansk, has also received many awards, reinforcing the belief that even in the 21st century, we still need ragged guitar riffs, accompanied by melodic vocals, the main hallmarks of Trupa Trupa.

Since releasing its Doors-inspired debut, Trupa Trupa ...

View
Based in
Finland, Helsinki
Style
Imagine a pitch-black post-apocalyptic world with dark urban tunes howling around and you have View. This mysterious hip-hop act combines modern elements in a fresh and oh-so-dark way. Behind View is 20-something rapper Juuso Ruohonen and producer Joonas Laaksoharju. The Finnish duo are only starting out in their home country but have already played sold-out gigs in Berlin....
Wandl
Based in
Austria, Vienna
Style
Maybe it's because it simply fit the image of Vienna being a laid-back, high-standard-of-living, nothing-to-do metropolis that cloud rap became such a big phenomenon all over the region in 2015....
We Bless This Mess
Based in
Portugal, Porto
Style

We Bless This Mess is a solo project. At least, it started that way. Now playing with a five-piece band, headed by Nelson Graf Reis, the project started to gain supporters with the utmost ease. When Nelson presented his project in Brazil, he ended up recording a debut EP and even sold out a show. Friends volunteered to create videos and join him on stage to help out. Because while this might be a solo project, wherever Nelson goes, he seems to be either surrounded or making new friends.
