" Euphoric analogue ambient techno "

Think of “supergroups” and the mind tends to fixate on indie and rock behemoths; Atoms For Peace, Them Crooked Vultures, The Last Shadow Puppets. The individual members of AVAVAV however, while no less acclaimed, work in an entirely different genre; electronica. ELOQ, UNKWON, and DJ E.D.D.E.H., all well known in their own right, have formed what is possibly the genre’s first supergroup, pooling their resources and talent to, thus far, great effect; two acclaimed EPs, a series of stunning singles, and numerous festival appearances turning what started as a side project into a fully fledged, in-demand band, with an album slated for later this year.

‘About You’ gives a pretty good idea of what AVAVAV feel most at home with; a warm, hazy quality washes over their subdued electro, as if it’s been dipped in a pool of golden sunshine. Halfway to ambient house, it’s all a little woozy to work up some proper friction, but the laid-back feel suits the laconic beats and vocal samples. Incredible accomplished, it’s also not the only style they excel at; scratchy techno (‘Mello’), four-to-the-floor bangers (‘Total Recall’), and even Blade Runner-era Vangelis soundscapes (‘Intet Intet’) all appear on their most recent EP, an impressive range by any measure.

Medative or pulsating, bright or subdued, their music is never less than enthralling, the trio fast becoming masters at letting their ideas run free and coming up with gold. Feeding both the brain and the feet is a rare skill in electronic music; AVAVAV are on a path to do exactly that.
