If people travel to Rio de Janeiro to dance baile funk, or visit Berlin to rave in Berghain, they should probably also go to Lisbon to experience a fresh take on a dancefloor-live band, in an act that feel like they’ll make you dance ’til you’re dead, Bateu Matou.

What makes this band so unique is the mixed experience of the three band members (Riot, Quim Albergaria, and Ivo Costa) playing rock, house, rap, baile funk, drum‘n’bass, or kuduro. Riot was one of the producers in Buraka Som Sistema, Quim is one of drummers/singers in rock band PAUS, and Ivo is used to playing with soul, fado and African acts.

Listening to their debut album, you can understand how big the blend of genres is, bringing a soulful groove with ‘Fica’ (which features singer Toty Sa’Med) or a punk-funaná energy in ‘Lume’ (feat. Scuru Fitchadu). But it’s far more than that.

There are some acts with which you only understand their full potential after watching them on stage. Imagine a crossover between a DJ, always mixing music, but with three drummers playing the beats. You will probably hear a live mashup of Beyonce with their own ‘Subi Subi’, or a classic house track like Daft Punk’s ‘One More Time’ blended with ‘Povo’. 

If you find yourself at a Bateu Matou gig, let’s hope you have some comfortable shoes on, because you are going to dance. It’s a party, every time!
