" Coming-of-age exploration with 00s vibes "
Noted for her candid lyrics about the frustrations of everyday teenage life and all kinds of relationships, Bo Milli emerged with catchy alt-pop singles, including her debut EP ‘Making Friends’ (out in October 2023). She nods to artists such as Phoebe Bridgers, Soccer Mommy and Sigrid, as well as mid-00s pop-punk youth anthems, and has quickly developed a loyal following who are drawn to her honesty. Her self-deprecating humor and emotional depth are part of her charm, countering existential angst with hopeful hooks, speaking about coming-of-age issues, the threat of environmental crisis, the angst of feeling unwanted, and the dreams her generation hold while juggling so many worries about almost everything, ultimately make her a fresh new voice in music.
Hailing from Bergen, Norway, a city well known for its vibrant alternative scene, Bo Milli (real name Emilie Østebø) quickly emerged with her debut single ‘At the Wheel’, talking about how becoming an adult supposedly makes you responsible for not just yourself (“we go out drinking while the world dies”), that drew significant praise and attention. Feelings of being inadequate like in ‘Good Kid’ (“I’m sorry I’m already such a disappointment”) or even ignored in ‘FOMO’, while also nail-biting over a guy she likes in ‘Come After Me’ are just a few examples of her broad lyrical palette, juxtaposing melancholy and optimism, apathy, and strength of will. Bo Milli is fine-tuning her sweet but also brutally honest approach, and her eagerness to explore definitely hints at heaps of potential.
