" A Spanish songwriter examining the chaos of the world "

Marcos Crespo is not afraid of using strong words to describe his dark thoughts. This Spanish artist, musician and producer has named his solo project Depresión Sonora – ‘Sound Depression’ in English. He released an intriguing self-titled EP in 2020, followed by a second EP in 2021, ‘Historias Tristes Para Dormir Bien’ (‘Sad Stories to Sleep Well’), and finally a debut album in 2022 called ‘El Arte De Morir Muy Despacio’ (‘The Art of Dying Slowly’). The lexical field of melancholy perfectly fits his post-punk songs and the way he sings them, in Spanish, in a foreboding tone, with a preference for spoken-word.

Hailing from Vallecas, a distinctive neighbourhood of Madrid, Marcos Crespo was quite prolific during the pandemic, and his music reflects the chaotic context in which it was created. Loneliness, lies and the anguish of love are some of the topics he explores on his first album, relying on inspiration from new wave and post-punk heroes from the eighties, such as Joy Division and The Cure. Despite this obvious reference to the past, the Spanish songwriter sounds like a spokesman for his generation (he was born in 1998). After expressing his disillusionment, not without a sense of irony and poetry, he shows some signs of hope and, against all odds with such a name, Depresión Sonora provides some much needed comfort to listeners. As many troubled songwriters proved throughout the history of music, sharing your deepest anxieties with other people is a way to cure loneliness and turmoil.
