A talented instrumentalist looking for artistic challenges in the unknown
" An ethereal cello sound combining the real world with the world of dreams. "
There are sounds that evoke various emotions, build specific atmospheres, or take you to another world. Some become a bridge between two worlds, like a link between reality and the world of dreams. One way to produce such a sound is with the cello, and Dobrawa Czocher is a real master of playing this instrument.
Starting her musical education at the age of 7, Czocher walked her own path, which she follows to this day. In the meantime, she graduated from the Music University of F. Chopin in Warsaw, and Hochschule für Musik in Detmold, and then played in the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie (Young German Philharmonic). Today, she is the principal cellist at the Neue Philharmonie Berlin and a soloist at the Szczecin Philharmonic. Such a huge output at the age of only 30 makes it necessary to look for new challenges somewhere else.
Before Dobrawa Czocher decided to pursue solo work and record her own material, she had successfully joined forces with her friend, the talented pianist, Hania Rani. The pair recorded two albums as a duo. The debut one is entitled ‘Biała Flaga’ an original, neoclassical interpretation of the repertoire of one of the most distinguished bands for Polish music – Republika. As a result of their reunion, the ‘Inner Symphonies’ album was released in 2021 by the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon label. At that time, both artists were already widely appreciated instrumentalists.
Individually, as a cellist, Dobrawa Czocher focuses on combining two schools – the classical one and the contemporary one, bringing her work closer to alternative music from ambient or film music. On her debut album, entitled ‘Dreamscapes’, Dobrawa mixes two more worlds – reality and dreams. Fascination with dream state built the character of the record and gave it an appropriate narrative.
On its release, Dobrawa Czocher presented a vision of imaginative music that can be the background for various states and emotions accompanying us during sleep. On the one hand, calm and gentle, and on the other, dynamic and full of tension. Dobrawa uses the full spectrum of her instrumental skills to create a unique atmosphere, unlike anything that is commonly known to us. The participation of the German artist Niklas Paschburg in the production of the album added to the whole film entourage, thanks to which the sound of “Dreamspaces”, like a soundtrack that stimulates the imagination.
Announcing her album, Dobrawa Czocher asks the listeners a question: “What was happening in the land of dreams? Where have we gone?” Listening to this album, one feels like dreaming endlessly and just following the sound of the cello.
