" DIY folky guitars, synths and catchy rhythms "

Combining a frolicsome persona with a DIY indie style and production sound, Hector Gachan, an Australian/ Bosnian artist who is currently living in Edinburgh, hit the indie mainstream with the release of his debut album. While his image projected a charmingly laid-back type probably never taking anything too seriously, his songs have often hidden mature themes like growing up, loneliness and commitment, under layers of sweet and sour synths, folky guitars and catchy rhythms. Gachan recorded his debut album, ‘Untitled ’91’, released in 2017 via the French label Nice Guys, in the intimacy of his own bedroom, bouncing around in musical genres and tones, echoing Mac DeMarco’s vulnerable indie fare and Part Time’s lo-fi and yet primitive synth pop. The combination perfectly suited to his lyrical confessions about his journey in between the different worlds of East and West.

Four years after his debut album, and still operating in the privacy of his home studio, Hector’s sophomore single, ‘Care 2 Share’, is brimming with experimentation but equally overflowing with undeniable pop sensibilities.  There are cascading guitar grooves and bumping synths, soaked with sweet pop melodies, hints of Quincy Jones funk, identity questions and cultural diversity.

Hector is a declared fan of Alan Watts, the American beat generation mentor, and he’s infused many of his readings into the lyrics. The songs mainly reflect Hector’s struggles of homesickness, loneliness – “Whether here or there/ Always unknown /On my own” (‘Asking For a Friend’), and the modern way of living “Quiet quaking irony/ Is the western way”, he sings in the eponymous track. But aside from his thoughtful and personal songwriting, Hector offers an ode to being carefree throughout his accessible and solid pop music.
