" A unique blend of Finnish pop with reggaeton beats "

In the video for ‘La Chica-cá’, unveiled in February 2024, Joalin walks alone in a forest, surrounded by snow, or sits in a lonely wooden cabin while snowflakes are whirling around outside. With this typical Scandinavian environment, you might expect folky acoustic soundscapes, or an eerie electronic song, but you would be wrong! In a crystal-clear voice, Joalin sings in Spanish and English over reggaeton beats, R&B textures, and tropical melodies. The 22-year-old singer-songwriter blows hot and cold over pop music.

Everything becomes clearer when we take a look at her background. She was born in Turku, in the South-West of Finland, but she spent most of her childhood in Spain and Mexico. Her mother and stepfather used to run a dancing school in the Mexican resort city of Playa del Carmen. Joalin took lessons there and became an accomplished dancer, with wonderful singing skills: no wonder she was recruited by Simon Fuller to become the Finnish member of the international pop group Now United in 2017, before deciding to pursue a solo career.

During a 2021 lockdown, she started writing her own songs, with the encouragement of the Finnish producer Jori Sjöroos. Her debut single, the melancholic and delicate ‘Angelito’(2022), was a fascinating introduction to her world, one which developed with the ‘I’m the One’ EP. Joalin now has more than 3 million followers on Instagram and the same amount on TikTok – quite impressive for an artist who is yet to release her first album, which is highly anticipated and will be facilitated by her recent signing to London Records/Because Music. ¡Venga, venga!
