" Millennial Grunge with a punch "

If nostalgia was a powerful force, then Laura Lee would be a Goddesse. The German singer-songwriter manipulates sentimentality, pulling at the desire for melancholic sounds with heavy, distorted and heartfelt sounds. It’s something the band calls millennial grunge, which shouldn’t be that surprising when taking into account Laura Lee’s previous project, Gurr.

Formed around five years ago Gurr — a project Laura founded alongside Andreya Casablanca — turned the German music scene upside down with its palatable take one 90s rock music and sunshine guitar music. Now with the band on a hiatus of sorts, Laura Lee has assembled a new motley crew of musicians, including Berlin mainstays Eilis Frawley on drums, Strand Child’s Mario Quezada, and No Berlin’s Mark Eric Lewis.

Beyond the music’s noise and energy, the ensemble of tracks that make up the band’s debut album ‘Wasteland’ (released December 3rd on Duchess Box) are tinged with melodic-emotion. Far from being just an amalgamation of the 90s grunge sound, ‘Wasteland’ is equally influenced by the likes of Can and Neu!, with the heady-sounds of German psych-wave driving through the songs’ aesthetics. Laura’s no-nonsense attitude also resonates on the album’s lead-single ‘Craigslist Boy’, a rallying call against stalker culture. Overall, with a strong attitude and catalogue of songs, everything is in place for Laura Lee and her Jettes to take off. We can only sit back and see how far they fly.
