Indie pop, left-field pop

" Fragile vocals with darkly beautiful left-field pop "

Ohnody is the alias of Dóri Hegyi, a Hungarian artist whose dreamy, otherworldly vocals bear comparisons to Elisabeth Fraser (that’s something you certainly don’t see often). Mixing electronic-pop textures, spare beats and fragile vocals, Ohnody works in a similar left-field pop as artists like Aurora, Austra, and her fellow-native artist, Brenka. Dóri has described her project as interdisciplinary that merges her four core values: “minimal and sophisticated drawings, free-spoken and deep poems, supple and emotional vocals, clumsy instruments”. She released her first EP, “Nude”, in 2018, however her first real success came with the track “Hideg” which was included in her first official release, Egy Igaz Szerelem (literally meaning ‘a true love’), that came out two years later. Her album was selected amongst the best Hungarian albums in 2020 and Dóri received the Hungarian Collecting Society’s ‘Artisjus Junior Pize’.

All songs are performed exclusively in Hungarian and the arrangements added to Dóri’s ethereal voice and lyrical expression set the tone as minimal, poetic and deeply emotional. In her sophomore album, Sietünk Meghalni (‘We Rush to Die’) she navigates sweeping and sugary choruses, exploring issues such as emotional repression, acceptance and release. No house is built for me/for me, you are my home” she sings in her native language in “Szívemben Őrzöm”, channeling stark but eerie pop atmospherics softened even further with the use of harp, before passing the dimly-lit torch to the glassy echoes of “Edesem” and from there to the neo-noir “Valami Nem Enged” and so on. Ohnody blends acoustic instruments with minimalistic processed harmonies, synthesizers, and various programmin’, all adding to a haunting, pulsing and dreamy result.
