" Drumming, singing and rapping like a poet "

Firing out words as if they were timpani hits, caressing the drums to tear poetry from them. Weaving melodies that coil around your body like rattlesnakes, and creating ambient moments that transport you to unreal places. Denmark-based Norwegian drummer, singer and actress Øyunn is able to do all this and more, in a personal project that mixes contemporary jazz with rap and alternative pop with absolute mastery.

Having lent her voice and beats to artists such as Efterklang, Bugge Wesseltoft, Agnes Obel, Sam Gendel and Our Broken Garden, this Copenhagen-based artist has debuted with ‘Aspects‘ (Midnight Confessions, 2023), a work originally created as an audiovisual show that combines film, song, rap, monologue and dialogue for the Ultima Festival in Oslo. The result is a magnificent compendium of songs and grooves full of expressiveness. It tells the story of Rosa, an alter ego of the artist who, after entering in a dysfunctional dynamic, manages to reconnect with her voice.

Drums, double bass and synthesizers provide exceptionally transporting moments that take us to a tremendously rich and original personal universe. There are moments of calm and bursts of energy, warm beats and misty atmospheres, dreamlike melodies and tribal rhythms, industrial fuss and incandescent improvisations. The result is a set of arrangements full of beauty, and a controlled chaos that has earned comparisons to Björk’s early work. That comparison is no small thing.
