" Sixties retro pop fantasy "
The slow, brick-by-brick construction of the Paul The Walrus project is almost complete. Their long-awaited, once-postponed full-length debut ‘Sunset Clause’ is ready for late 2022 release. Five years ago, young Zagreb based singer songwriter Borna Mijalović started his 1960’s style retro-pop fantasy, clearly influenced by the Beatles, with bedroom recordings that led to the self-released two-part EP ‘Dolphin and Whale Watching’.
In the early days, Borna Mijalović (vox, guitar) was joined on stage by Martin Trgovec – Greif (drums), Miro Kadijević (bass) and Ivan Luić (keys, guitar). Paul The Walrus’ 2021 live session, with additional synth and tambourine player Anja Salihagić, was filmed and recorded in Zagreb warehouse art gallery Lauba. The feel-good vibe of Lauba’s recording was strong enough to push them on to the big stage and in front of a wider audience as an opening act for INmusic Festival 2022.
In the meantime, those Beatles followers had explored some more contemporary indie-pop styles with latest singles ‘Breathe’ and ‘Shade’, both released as a preview of the forthcoming album ‘Sunset Clause’. Lavishly arranged ‘Breathe’ sounds like an homage to their Brit-Pop heroes of the past and present, including a video shot in London with young English actor Scott McKenzie. ‘Shade’ is another catchy tune with a nice psychedelic touch and an excellent animated video made by the band’s visual artist Mirta Filipović. It’s been a winding road, but seeing Paul The Walrus fully formed was worth the wait.
