" Outspoken and unrepentant "
“Normal is boring” proclaims R.Y.F. on her most streamed single, a pounding zeitgeisty rager that takes aim at more or less everything that’s wrong in a male-dominated society. The defiant musician from Italy certainly follows her own advice. She started her career as a typical guitar-strumming singer-songwriter, though even then she stood apart from the crowd, thanks to her fearless addressing of issues such as mental health and queerness.
Like many other people, however, R.Y.F. underwent an artistic transformation during the global pandemic. Venturing into electronic music for the first time, she emerged from lockdown with ‘Everything Burns’, a set of tightly wound dance punk-bangers like the aforementioned ‘Normal Is Boring’. The album is a creative outburst that veers from joy to rage, and is equally at home on the dance floor or, well, wrecking your home, finding catharsis in attacking the inequalities and injustices that permeate the modern world.
That electrifying switch wasn’t all this promising artist had in store, however. A year after ‘Everything Burns’, she took to the theatrical stage, creating an original soundtrack for a play by the acclaimed Motus Theatre Company. She drew on her whole musical identity when working on it, combining electric guitar and vocals to enhance the dramatic soundscapes. Though not as accessible as some of her previous work, the ‘Tutto Brucia OST’, released in october 2022, reaffirms R.Y.F. as the sort of bold – and decidedly not boring – artist we need these days.
