Switzerland is known for chocolate, cheese, timepieces and being somewhere high in the mountains, not for being a global hip-hop powerhouse. The Geneva-born musician began making music in his early teens, influenced not just by a wide range of musical genres such as funk, soul, and rock, but also by his love of classic cinema, and dare we say it, Switzerland’s more famous exports as well.

How else do you explain the velvety chocolate smoothness of his instrumentals, gliding fluidly around his vocals even on go-hard bangers like ‘Short Vision’? Or the tasteful cheesiness of his slower jams, especially when the French lingo kicks in? And what about the characteristic Swiss precision with which he hits his complex rhyme schemes? It’s all there, laid bare for the world and fuelled by uncut creative vision and energy.

Varnish La Piscine’s inventive beats and stylistic musical blend are right up there with the likes of Tyler, The Creator when it comes to contemporary storytellers, and his double-threat approach helped him find his way to the Ed Banger label after the release of his first film. With new music on the way, a growing following, and bold imagination, it’s only a matter of time before he hits that final Swiss signifier – conquering new peaks.
