Following a new law passed by the European Parliament, subscribers to online streaming services will no longer be subject to restrictions when abroad in 2018.
The new law, which was passed late last week, will mean that if media published in another country is put online through services such as Deezer, Spotify, and Netflix, you will no longer be subject to geo-blocking while in another country.
As reported by The Irish Times, “the law is due to take effect in the first half of 2018 and will apply to new and current subscriptions.”
The move comes as the European Parliament also announced that roaming charges will no longer apply to those roaming in the EU from July 2017.
Service providers will be required to tell customers of verification used also.
The European Commission announced proposals in December 2015 to make it easier for consumers to access online services while in another country based in the EU.
Once it is verified by the Council of Ministers, the new streaming law will be required to take effect within nine months.
