Europavox Bucharest panels and workshops : what’s next for European music ?

As part of Europavox Bucharest festival by Control Club, the French Institute in Romania and Europavox present the second edition of “What’s next for European music?”.

We’ll first welcome you with coffee and introductory speeches from 9:45 to 10:30 am (EET). Then, two round tables will be organized in the morning, followed by two workshops in the afternoon. Please note that another workshop will be available all day, upon registration. “What’s next for European music?” is a free event, but the number of attendees is limited. We invite you to send us a registration request to invitation@institutfrancais.ro. Discover the full program below.

On April 5th and 6th, professionals of the music and cultural sector are invited at the Cinema Elvire Popesco and the Atrium of the French Institute (Bd. Dacia 77, Bucharest) to join panels and workshops, to discuss today’s and tomorrow’s stakes of European policies and practices.

🌿 10:30 – 11:30 am // ROUND TABLE – Sustainable mobility in the live music industry; (re)thinking practices

Considering the emergency to adopt more environmentally sustainable practices, the European Green deal, adopted by the EU and its member states, targets a 55% minimum cut of our greenhouse gas emissions in the EU by 2030. The cultural sector, by bringing to life representations of the world and through the activities conducted to make this happen, carries a double responsibility: rethinking processes and opening new doors for the imagination.

Are we on the path of the green road, and can we think of this responsibility also in terms of opportunities? Bringing together artists, experts, and festivals producers, this panel will especially focus on one of the costliest posts of gas emissions in our carbon budget: mobility.

🎤 11:30 am – 12:30 pm // ROUND TABLE – Not born yesterday: is there a new age for concerts?

Our cultural practices and encounters are especially essential in our first experiences, and fundamental in the construction of taste and habits. Experiencing music can come in many shapes, alone or shared, but as per the popular saying “faster alone further together”.

That’s where spaces like festivals and concert halls are precious to bring together audiences and artists and share new music experiences. The closure of such spaces for more than two years did (does?) have a tremendous impact. In a landscape where music is more and more present, with more than 100 000 fresh tracks published on streaming platforms every day, let’s press pause and consider how live music is part of young people’s everyday life.

Involving students, teachers, research institutes, and concert producers, this panel will explore the DNA of concerts, the remaining effects of the pandemic, and what is expected by young people in concerts nowadays.

📍 Cinema Elvire Popesco

🥪 1 – 2 pm // LUNCH BREAK

🎵 2 – 3:45 pm // WORKSHOP – Highlighting Ukrainian artists

For more than a year now, the Ukrainian people are fighting for their freedom and for their independence. Cultural identity plays a key role in the fight, in which many artists and cultural professionals are involved. Mobilization of the European Union runs through culture as well, including a call to support artists outside of their country, cultural organisations in Ukraine, and preparation for the post-war recovery of the Ukrainian cultural and creative sector in the medium term.

In this workshop, cultural professionals from Ukraine will share their vision on the different kind of support that are and can be implemented, and  on how can cultural organisations help to settle the Ukrainian identity on an international stage.

💻 4 – 5 pm //  WORKSHOP – Cultural journalism: how to grow the independent cultural media sector and foster collaborations

Independent media are key players in the music industry value chain. Contributing to a diverse landscape, highlighting all music styles, genres, languages, and inspirations takes a village, ultimately serving one main goal: allowing artists to thrive, build professional careers. At the crossroad between artists, live events producers, and independent media, what are today’s editorial practices? What are the challenges encountered, and how can we create even more innovative, sustainable, and human ways of presenting music?
