Reeperbahn Festival 2022: 5 artists that you shouldn't miss

Every September, the eyes of the music community are locked on a certain street in the St Pauli district of Hamburg, the famous Reeperbahn. The former home of the Beatles early in their career, it is an avenue almost one kilometer long that has hosted the largest club festival of Europe since 2006, with hundreds of events focusing annually on up-and-coming international artists. It’s virtually impossible to make a choice between all of the potential discoveries proposed by the big German rendez-vous. But let’s try: here are five of the most exciting gigs that you shouldn’t miss at the Reeperbahn Festival between the 21st and the 24th of September.

Emilie Zoé

To see Emilie Zoé live is a true experience. It’s like peeking through a window, expecting a soft and gentle approach of rock, folk and songwriting, and being surprised to feel the glass being shattered into thousands of pieces, as her songs feel so visceral, intimate, and sincere. It’s a magma of raw emotions (see her incredible « Volcan », released on her latest album Hello Future Me) spilled with a sometimes fragile but always on point vocals, guitars, drums, keyboards. You’ve been warned: there will be shivers.

Bratři

A family story: Jiří and Ondřej Veselý, the two Czech brothers that make up Bratři, are part of that household of producers that create intricate electronic music that can easily make you dance, of course, but with whom there is more: a feeling, a vibe, a journey in itself. It’s a gang in which Austrian duo HVOB or German producer Stephan Bodzin can also be found, putting techno in clubs and in hearts at the same time.

freekind.

Let’s chill a bit. This European duo (Sara, the pianist and vocalist, is from Croatia, the drummer Nina is from Slovenia, and they met at music school in Austria) embodies its name perfectly, freekind. Every note is an occasion to give a sense of liberty, gentleness and warmth, thanks to their neo-soul music that feels connected to nature.

Alyona Alyona

It hasn’t taken long for Alyona Alyona to be crowned “The new rap icon for Ukrainian millennials“. And she hasn’t stolen that title one bit: the former nursery school teacher has the capacity to mix the strength of realistic lyrics, painting the day-to-day life of Ukrainian youth, with powerful soundtracks, traditional singing and oh-so-catchy videoclips, while passing political messages about the ongoing war in Ukraine. Iconic indeed.

Thumper

What a great time to be Irish! A few decades after the golden-age of pop-rock by U2 and The Cranberries, the island is back on every rock-fan map, with a punkier twist, from Fontaines D.C., Gilla Band (formerly known as Girl Band), The Murder Capital and, blessing Reeperbahn this year with tense guitars and a DIY approach, Thumper. A cherry on the cake: there are two drummers in the band, for more… thumping.
