The gradual ascendancy of Athens’ Maximum High has been a meticulously plotted journey, borne out through grit and attention to detail. Not to mention rare talent, seemingly effortless musical cohesion, and a handful of tunes that would be considered a classic in any era.
The foursome, consisting of Irene Dimopoulou (vocals, The Earthbound, Dustbowl), Thanos Amorginos (guitar, The Last Drive), Dimitri Koutsiouris (bass, Strays, Black Drummer) and Nick Zografos (drums, Closer), forcefully welds together a growing amalgam of classic rock tunes and fierce blues punk experiments.
It really is impressive how the band combines these sounds, with Led Zeppelin’s pervasive guitar and a Grace Slick/Alice Russell vocal influence (Irene could sing the phonebook and still elicit emotion) still a primary inspiration, but also coloured by Stooges-like rawness and Ike & Tina’s soulful sexiness. Nonetheless, the pure drive of the songs is never sacrificed.
Their 2016 self-titled EP is bold, effective and seriously impressive, bolstered by an edge-of-the-seat performance, even when they demonstrate a cracked delicacy, as in ‘Don’t Let Me Down’, for example. In fact, that’s the band’s essence: respectfully updating the past with considered modernity while adding its own flair. Maximum High is classic, classy, and absolutely rocks!
