" An Italian prodigy effortlessly reviving the Nineties "

Any Other’s new album, ‘Stillness, Stop: You Have A Right To Remember’ (released in January 2024), is a wonderful catch-up session for anyone who would like to discover one of the most promising artists on the Italian indie pop-folk scene. Some of you may already know Any Other through their first two albums: ‘Silently. Quietly. Going Away’ (2015) and ‘Two, Geography’ (2018). These impressive collections of songs are the brainchildren of Adele Altro, a non-binary musician from Milan who excels in songwriting, singing (in English), producing, arranging, and playing multiple instruments. Their latest single, ‘If I Don’t Care’, is the perfect introduction to their psyche. Both graceful and DIY, elegant and raw, this catchy song is an ode to letting go, not wasting time on things that don’t matter, or people who are not worth it – a great resolution to kick off the year.

In their brand new third album, Any Other proudly displays their passion for Nineties sounds: a casual flow borrowed from Pavement, a way of injecting jazz in pop with a similar feel to Fiona Apple, adding violins to rock songs in the manner of Tracy Bonham… Other American artists such as Sufjan Stevens and Dirty Projectors come to mind, as well as Mitski, for the common ground they share, expressing their deepest feelings in music, overcoming difficult experiences through art, or dissecting long-lost memories. Just like some of them, Any Other have decided not to choose between acoustic and electric guitars, or strings and electronics, all of which cohabit here in total harmony, warmly welcoming their listeners into their universe.
