The less heralded a culture you come from, the more you need to push things forward. Faroese poetic singer and songwriter Dania O. Tausen is an artist who cherishes her mother tongue (like Eivør and Heiðrik did before her) and uses it as a vehicle in her sonic storytelling. Her 2023 album ‘Ja/ Nei Og Restin Av Vikuni’ (which translates to ‘yes/ no and the rest of the week’) is a candid collection of witty lyrical perspectives, sadly beautiful songs, and commanding melodies. She collaborates once again with multi-instrumentalist and producer Benjamin Djurhuus, only this time she adds songwriter/ musician Ragnar Finsson (known for Horrse, Raske Drenge) in the loop, for her ruminative indie-folk confections. Her songs dive into the ordinary (working, travelling), while having a flair for capturing the melodrama of youth (toxic relationships, doubts around choices in life). Her keen eye for detail, the gentle blur of acoustic guitars, slow-moving electronics, and her soft voice make for a perfect blend.
In 2021 she made her debut with the album ‘Gonguteigatúnato’ (meaning: ‘crosswalktalks’), a unique and experimental work of strong melodies and quirky lyrics. “(They are) just songs that want to be allowed to live their own lives in the world where the little things matter and the big questions are allowed to stay unanswered”, she’s stated in her Bandcamp profile. Dania has such a compelling artistic presence, that even her less immediate material bears remarkable weight. Winner of Cover Art and Music Video of the Year at FMA 2021, and winner of several awards for the documentary about her poetry book ‘SKÁL‘, as well as winner of Audience and Jury prizes at SunsEurope contest 2023, she has picked up some important wins; and she’s only just starting out.
