…this quote is exactly why Cid Rim, aka Clemens Bacher, does his very own thing. After working with and for Gorillaz, Sky Ferreira, The 1975 and Theophilus London, the latest album by the Viennese drummer and producer was released in 2022. Without any interest in imitating other musicians, Cid Rim creates his own sound, which is as multilayered and diverse as any. 

Elements from various kinds of club music, jazz, hip-hop and a little bit of psychedelica merge on his latest record (‘Songs For Vienna’) into a unique concept. Released on the label LuckyMe and recorded in Cid Rim’s studio in London, ‘Songs For Vienna’ is the continuation (or maybe answer?) to the previous record ‘Songs Of Vienna’, released in 2021. The difference in preposition also means a difference in point of view, perhaps due to his many changes of location (L.A., Paris, New York, London). Unlike his previous albums ‘Material’ and ‘CID RIM’, this time, the drummer ventures into writing lyrics and singing. The outcome is songs that are more accessible – and perhaps even more pop – than previously, although they have lost none of their usual depth and complexity. 

Cid Rim’s voice sometimes adds a certain indifference to the compositions through its almost languid character, but at the same time gives the tracks an ephemeral edge. 

“Take a leap of faith”

Although it is almost impossible to pick out individual moments – the album is a masterpiece in its entirety – ‘Last Snow’, ‘4AM Walk’ and ‘We Drums Two’ deserve special mention. In any case, ‘Songs For Vienna’ is an album that should always be heard in its entirety, rather than just individual outtakes: “Take a leap of faith with me,” as CID RIM urges in ‘Feedback Loop’. We recommend it.
