" Creative alt-pop inspired by rap "
Great British Bake Off, Dali, Real Housewives, Klimt, Tik Tok, and Nanny Fine. It may seem odd, but in the creative mind of an artist like Berry Galazka, anything can fit. Polish-born, Florida-raised and now London-based, the anarchic pop-rapper knows how to merrily dive into the realms of all kinds of influences, musical or otherwise. Inspired by hip-hop, R&B, feminist themes, social media consumption and cultural images beyond time and space, she pursues a rebellious alternative sound by blending hip hop and distorted guitars. Her newest EP, ‘Leash’ (late 2023) via Climax Records sees her dressed as a weird babushka singing about a Dali surrealist painting (‘Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bee’), making hardened but true statements: “Nothing deserves unquestionable reverence”.
Berry Galazka was first known in 2020 through her debut single ‘Man Can’t Hang’, a message to patriarchy. The new rap-pop auteur and cynical philosopher caught the listener’s attention with her ear-worm music and blunt lyrics; “I wear my merch, fuck your label” she sang, and a pervasive force was born. ‘Marisa’ has a crooked kids’ melody while talking about her own experience standing up to her bully at 8 years-old. ‘Fran Fine’ feels like an ode to The Nanny’s TV character, and also to every confident person out there at the same time (“I look good at every angle”). Berry moves her voice around the tightly wound beats in such an unforced, carefree way that there’s plenty of emotional weight to what she’s saying. She’s original and you just can’t unsee her.
