" Mystical electronic soundscapes that talk of the nature of belonging "

Perera Elsewhere’s latest record ‘Home’ speaks to the large, cosmopolitan international community in Berlin, as it reflects on ideas of belonging and identity, something that most who have moved internationally can relate to. As someone who moved to Berlin over two decades ago, it’s something the artist has personal experience with, shapeshifting along with the zeitgeist, always rooted within the underground scene.

Aesthetically, there is no-one else who comes close to sounding like Perera Elsewhere, aka. Sasha Perera. An artist whose field lies with futurism, yet toys with nostalgia, the award-winning producer creates complex yet melancholy electronic music interwoven with broad themes and playful melodies. Originally from London, Perera has been making waves on the Berlin-front for over two decades, from fronting the riotous-bass trio Jahcoozi, to DJing and promoting through the city’s many nightclubs, playing an integral part in embedding dubstep and grime culture into the nightlife.

It wasn’t until 2013 that the Berliner actually released her debut record ‘Everlast’ on the LA-label Friends Of Friends. Far more introspective than the bass-heavy shenanigans of Jahcoozi, the lo-fi doom-folk sounds of ‘Everlast’ were both melancholic and progressive musically, providing the Berliner a real platform to really indulge herself into her music.

Now onto her third album ‘Home’, Perera’s work has been widely acknowledged by the musical community, having just won the Best Act accolade at this year’s VUT Indie Awards, in addition to being an in-demand producer, with the likes of cult-German star Nina Hagen requesting her services. ‘Home’ is also a remarkable feat of cutting-edges production and style, one that evades any comparison with its genre-agnostic compositions. The neo-folk, which has despondent and droney overtones, showcases an artist who is tuned into her own sound, one that creates narratives through tonality and language. After residing in Berlin for so long, it feels like the artist is finally at home with her style and music.
